What Auditors Actually Ask For
An FMCSA safety audit isn't a road test — it's a records review. Auditors work through a defined list of driver, vehicle, and carrier-level documents, checking each one against the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Most audit failures come from missing or incomplete paperwork, not unsafe equipment or drivers.
The Three Document Categories
- Driver-related: driver list, licenses, qualification files, hours-of-service records, medical certificates
- Vehicle-related: vehicle list, inspection and maintenance records, hazardous materials shipping papers (if applicable)
- Carrier / programmatic: proof of insurance, drug & alcohol testing program records, accident register
Organizing your files into these three categories ahead of time — before an audit is ever scheduled — is the single most effective way to walk in prepared.
