When Placards Are Required
Placarding requirements generally kick in based on the hazard class and quantity being transported — some materials (like most Class 1 explosives, Class 2.3 poison gases, and Class 7 radioactive materials) require placards at any quantity, while others only require them once a shipment crosses 1,001 lbs aggregate gross weight.
Placement Matters as Much as Selection
Choosing the right placard is only half the requirement — it also has to be placed on all four sides of the vehicle, be clearly visible, and not be obscured by other markings or dirt. The visual guide below is the fastest way to check both the correct placard and correct placement at a glance.
