What has to be on a compliant hazmat shipping paper, and how long to keep a copy.
What Has to Be On It
A compliant hazmat shipping paper needs the proper shipping name, hazard class, UN/NA identification number, and packing group, listed in that specific order — plus total quantity, number of packages, and an emergency response contact. Getting the sequence wrong is a surprisingly common citation, not just missing information.
Who Has to Keep It — and Where
The shipping paper has to be accessible to the driver at all times while the hazmat is on the vehicle — either within immediate reach while the vehicle is moving, or on the driver's seat when it isn't. Shippers also have to retain a copy for two years (three for hazardous waste) after the material is accepted for transport.
